Background:

Ski resorts experience frequent injuries and medical emergencies among skiers and snowboarders.
Ski patrols are crucial for initial patient assessment and stabilization.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the training, resources, and equipment of ski patrols in Utah.
To understand the preparedness of ski patrols for on-mountain medical incidents.

Main Methods:

Voluntary computerized survey distributed to ski patrol directors in Utah.
Data collected from directors representing 8 out of 14 ski resorts.

Main Results:

Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) is the primary training source for most Utah ski patrols.
All surveyed patrols possess essential first responder equipment.
Six of eight resorts have affiliated clinics; all have aeromedical transport access.

Conclusions:

Utah ski patrollers are proficient in managing trauma with available resources.
Affiliated clinics and aeromedical support ensure rapid patient transfer.
Enhanced training and protocols could further improve care for diverse injuries.
