Thalidomide treatment for Behçet

Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Behçet's disease is a rare multisystem inflammatory disorder.
  • Aphthous stomatitis is a common and often debilitating symptom.

Observation:

  • A 39-year-old female patient with Behçet's disease presented with severe, bipolar aphthous stomatitis.
  • The patient was treated with thalidomide.

Findings:

  • Thalidomide treatment was associated with significant weight gain in this patient.
  • This adverse effect requires monitoring during thalidomide therapy.

Implications:

  • Clinicians should be aware of potential weight gain as an adverse effect of thalidomide.
  • Monitoring metabolic changes is crucial for patients receiving thalidomide for Behçet's disease.
