Most electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) users quit because they were experimenting or disliked the experience. Goal-oriented users, like those quitting smoking, were more likely to continue using e-cigarettes.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Behavioral Science
- Tobacco Control
Background:
- Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are widely used, but motivations for initiation and cessation remain incompletely understood.
- Understanding user typologies is crucial for effective public health strategies regarding e-cigarette use.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore the primary reasons individuals initiate electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use.
- To identify common motivations for discontinuing e-cigarette use.
- To differentiate user profiles based on initiation and cessation patterns.
Main Methods:
- Analysis of a national sample of 3,878 U.S. adults who have ever tried e-cigarettes.
- Survey data collected on reasons for trying and stopping e-cigarette use.
- Statistical comparison of discontinuation rates between goal-oriented and non-goal-oriented users.
Main Results:
- Curiosity was the most common reason for trying e-cigarettes (53%), followed by social influence (34%) and smoking reduction (30%).
- Nearly two-thirds (65%) of users discontinued e-cigarette use.
- Non-goal-oriented reasons for initiation (e.g., curiosity) were associated with significantly higher discontinuation rates (81%) compared to goal-oriented reasons (45%).
- Primary reasons for stopping included experimentation (49%), dissatisfaction with the experience (15%), and taste (14%).
Conclusions:
- Two distinct categories of e-cigarette users emerge: goal-oriented users (often continuing use) and non-goal-oriented experimenters (often discontinuing use).
- Future research and public health interventions should differentiate between these user types.
- Tailored strategies are needed based on e-cigarettes' role in smoking cessation or potential deterrence.

Drugs Acting on Autonomic Ganglia: Stimulants
Ganglionic stimulants activate NM nicotinic receptors in autonomic ganglia, falling into two categories: nicotine mimetics [e.g., lobeline, dimethylpiperazine, tetramethylammonium] and muscarinic receptor agonists [e.g., muscarine, methacholine]. The first category's action is rapid and blocked by nicotinic receptor antagonists, while the second category's action is delayed and blocked by atropine-like agents. Nicotine, an alkaloid, affects the heart rate by stimulating...
