This literature review identified 17 core competencies for advanced practice nursing (APN) roles globally. These findings aid in developing consistent international APN standards and assessment tools.

Background:

International consensus on advanced practice nursing (APN) definitions and core competencies remains elusive.
Despite this, global efforts are underway to establish standards and competencies for APN roles.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify common traits in advanced practice nursing competency development worldwide.
To establish a competency map for international advanced practice nursing.

Main Methods:

A comprehensive literature review and directed search of institutional websites were conducted.
Qualitative content analysis of key documents was used to identify common traits across countries.

Main Results:

119 journal articles and 97 grey literature documents on APN competencies were identified.
Analysis revealed 17 transversal competency domains common across international APN frameworks.

Conclusions:

Essential competency domains for advanced practice nursing exist despite diverse development patterns.
These 17 core competencies can inform the development of assessment instruments and comparative studies of APN services.
