Cholecystitis01:20

Cholecystitis

20
Cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder, most commonly caused by obstruction of the cystic duct. This blockage prevents bile from draining, leading to gallbladder distension, inflammation, and potentially serious complications. This condition may present acutely or chronically and can happen with or without gallstones.EtiologyAbout 95% of cholecystitis cases are calculous, caused by gallstones blocking the cystic duct, leading to bile accumulation and inflammation of the gallbladder...

Gallbladder01:17

Gallbladder

3.1K
The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ that plays a crucial role in our digestive system. Measuring about 10 cm in length, it is comparable in size to a kiwi fruit and is located in a hollow area on the lower surface of the liver. The gallbladder's primary function is to store and concentrate bile, a fluid produced by the liver that aids in digestion.
The gallbladder's anatomy consists of three regions: the fundus, body, and neck. Extending from the neck, the cystic duct joins...

Appendicitis01:19

Appendicitis

18
Appendicitis is an acute inflammatory condition of the vermiform appendix, most commonly caused by obstruction of its lumen. The appendix is a narrow, blind-ended pouch that extends from the cecum, making it particularly prone to obstruction. Causes include fecaliths, lymphoid hyperplasia (often after viral infections), parasites, tumors, or foreign bodies. This obstruction initiates a cascade of pathological changes.Luminal Obstruction and Early InflammationAfter obstruction, normal mucosal...

Lipid Absorption01:24

Lipid Absorption

3.7K
Dietary triglycerides from chyme in the duodenum are mixed with bile salts produced by the liver to emulsify fats. As a result, large droplets are broken down into smaller ones, increasing the surface area for enzymatic action. Once emulsified, pancreatic lipases hydrolyze the triglycerides into free fatty acids and monoglycerides.
These breakdown products bind with bile salts and lecithin to form micelles, which quickly pass between microvilli to come in close contact with the apical...

Ascites01:19

Ascites

18
DefinitionAscites is the buildup of fluid inside the peritoneal cavity. It occurs when fluid moves out of the vascular system faster than the peritoneal lymphatics can remove it. This fluid shift is most commonly seen in liver cirrhosis but can also appear in several other systemic disorders.EtiologyCirrhosis remains the leading cause of ascites. Other conditions that can contribute include:Heart failureConstrictive pericarditisAbdominal cancersNephrotic syndromeSevere protein–calorie...

    Summary

This case report details a recurrent mesenteric cyst, a rare diagnosis near the pancreas. Radical management is crucial to prevent recurrence of these chylous cysts.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Surgical Oncology

    Background:

    • Mesenteric cysts are rare intra-abdominal masses.
    • Chylous cysts, a subtype, present diagnostic challenges, particularly when located near the pancreas.
    • Recurrence is common without radical treatment.

    Observation:

    • A case of recurrent mesenteric chylous cyst in a female patient is presented.
    • The cyst was located near the pancreas.
    • The patient had no prior history of acute pancreatitis.

    Findings:

    • Recurrent mesenteric cysts, specifically chylous cysts, necessitate aggressive management.
    • Incomplete resection or non-radical approaches lead to high recurrence rates.

    Implications:
