Risk factors for multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica and transverse myelitis
Established multiple sclerosis (MS) risk factors like smoking and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) are not linked to neuromyelitis optica (NMO) or transverse myelitis (TM). These factors appear to influence MS independently.

- Established risk factors for multiple sclerosis (MS) include smoking, infectious mononucleosis (IM), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) antibodies (anti-EBNA1 Ab), and HLA-DR15.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate if known MS risk factors are associated with the development of NMO or TM.
- To determine the independent contribution of these factors in MS pathogenesis.

- A case-control study was conducted using data from the Accelerated Cure Project for Multiple Sclerosis (ACP) Repository.
- Analyzed 1237 MS cases, 98 NMO cases, 133 TM cases, and 488 healthy controls.
- Assessed associations between smoking, IM history, anti-EBNA1 Ab titers, HLA-DR15, and disease odds, adjusting for covariates.

- The study confirmed expected associations between MS risk factors and MS.
- Little evidence of association was found between these established MS risk factors and the odds of developing NMO or TM.
- No significant interactions were observed among MS patients regarding these risk factors.

- Known risk factors for MS do not appear to increase susceptibility to NMO or TM.
- These risk factors seem to operate independently in the context of MS development.
