Background:

  • Localized infections, such as periodontal disease, are increasingly linked to systemic diseases.
  • Erectile dysfunction (ED) and chronic periodontitis share common risk factors, including diabetes, heart disease, and smoking.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the periodontal status in men with ED.
  • To investigate the association between vasculogenic ED and chronic periodontitis.

Main Methods:

  • 53 subjects with vasculogenic ED were categorized into three groups based on ED severity.
  • Clinical (probing pocket depth) and radiographic (alveolar bone loss) parameters were evaluated.
  • Statistical analysis included One-way ANOVA, Scheffe's test, and Karl Pearson's correlation.

Main Results:

  • Significant differences in probing pocket depth and alveolar bone loss were observed across the ED severity groups.
  • Both chronic periodontitis and ED demonstrated a positive correlation.

Conclusions:

  • Chronic periodontitis is associated with erectile dysfunction.
  • Further large-scale studies with confounder analysis and longitudinal follow-up are needed to fully elucidate this relationship.
