Light Acquisition02:16

Light Acquisition

8.0K
In order to produce glucose, plants need to capture sufficient light energy. Many modern plants have evolved leaves specialized for light acquisition. Leaves can be only millimeters in width or tens of meters wide, depending on the environment. Due to competition for sunlight, evolution has driven the evolution of increasingly larger leaves and taller plants, to avoid shading by their neighbors with contaminant elaboration of root architecture and mechanisms to transport water and nutrients.

Confocal Fluorescence Microscopy01:16

Confocal Fluorescence Microscopy

15.9K
Confocal microscopy is an advanced microscopic technique. The prime advantage of the confocal microscope over other microscopy techniques is its ability to block the out-of-focus light from the illuminated samples using pinholes. It is widely used with fluorescence optics to obtain high-resolution, sharp contrast images. Unlike optical microscopes, confocal microscopes use a focused beam of light laser to scan the entire sample surface at different z-planes. These microscopes are, therefore,...

    Area of Science:

    • Optoelectronics
    • Wireless Communication
    • Signal Processing

    Background:

    • Visible light communication (VLC) systems utilize LED lighting for data transmission.
    • Color Shift Keying (CSK) is a modulation scheme standardized in IEEE 802.15.7 for VLC.
    • Current CSK systems primarily support single-user communication.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To introduce multi-user capabilities into the existing CSK modulation scheme for VLC.
    • To enhance data throughput in VLC systems.
    • To ensure lighting quality, including dimming and flicker-free illumination, is maintained.

    Main Methods:

    • Proposed modifications to CSK for time-based multiplexing of user data.
    • Adapted modulation constellation symbols to encode data using RGB color band luminance.
    • Employed a low-complexity time-based pulse signal structure for user data separation.
    • Integrated a three-dimensional signal constellation design.

    Main Results:

    • Successfully demonstrated a novel architecture for multi-user CSK in VLC.
    • Achieved improved data throughput through the 3D constellation design.
    • Numerical simulations validated the performance of the proposed system.

    Conclusions:

    • The modified CSK scheme effectively supports multi-user communication in VLC systems.
    • The proposed method enhances data throughput without compromising lighting functionality.
    • The system ensures dimming capabilities and avoids perceptible flickering.
