Steroid-withdrawal rosacea-like dermatitis.

Y Tomita, H Tagami

    The Journal of Dermatology

    Summary

Continuous oral prednisone use in a lymphoma patient led to temporary rosacea-like dermatitis upon stopping the steroid. This suggests a steroid-withdrawal syndrome, specifically steroid-withdrawal rosacea-like dermatitis.

    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Malignant lymphoma patients often require long-term immunosuppressive therapy, including corticosteroids.
    • Continuous oral prednisone is a common treatment for various conditions, but its withdrawal can precipitate adverse effects.

    Observation:

    • A patient with malignant lymphoma experienced recurrent transient rosacea-like dermatitis.
    • The dermatitis consistently appeared several days after interrupting continuous oral prednisone therapy.

    Findings:

    • The observed rosacea-like eruption was diagnosed as steroid-withdrawal rosacea-like dermatitis.
    • This condition is considered a manifestation of the broader steroid-withdrawal syndrome.

    Implications:

    • Recognizing steroid-withdrawal rosacea-like dermatitis is crucial for managing patients on long-term steroids.
    • This finding highlights the importance of considering steroid withdrawal as a potential cause of dermatological symptoms in susceptible individuals.
