    Area of Science:

    • Biomedical Engineering
    • Traditional Chinese Medicine
    • Acupuncture Research

    Background:

    • Traditional acupuncture utilizes manual manipulation techniques like lifting and thrusting.
    • Developing non-invasive methods to replicate these techniques is of significant interest.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop and evaluate a novel laser-acupuncture system capable of performing lifting and thrusting manipulations.
    • To compare the efficacy of laser acupuncture with and without lifting and thrusting on human meridians.

    Main Methods:

    • A 780 nm laser diode system was designed with adjustable focus to simulate needle depth.
    • Light spot characteristics were analyzed to ensure comparability with traditional needle diameters.
    • Ryodoraku values of the heart and small-intestine meridians were measured after stimulating the Shenmen point (HT7) in five subjects.

    Main Results:

    • The focused laser spot diameter was 0.11 mm, comparable to acupuncture needles (0.22 mm).
    • Laser acupuncture incorporating lifting and thrusting significantly increased Ryodoraku values compared to stimulation without manipulation (p<0.05).

    Conclusions:

    • The developed laser-acupuncture system effectively simulates traditional acupuncture manipulation methods.
    • Laser acupuncture with lifting and thrusting demonstrates superior efficacy in stimulating human meridians, aligning with traditional acupuncture principles.
