Background:

  • Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging infectious disease caused by the SFTS virus (SFTSV).
  • While mice are susceptible to SFTSV, its effects in nonhuman primates remained uninvestigated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the susceptibility and pathological effects of SFTSV infection in rhesus macaques.
  • To characterize the clinical, immunological, and pathological responses to SFTSV in a nonhuman primate model.

Main Methods:

  • Rhesus macaques were infected with SFTSV.
  • Clinical signs, hematological and biochemical parameters, viral loads, antibody responses, cytokine profiles, and pathological lesions were monitored.

Main Results:

  • SFTSV infection in macaques resulted in mild symptoms including fever, thrombocytopenia, leukocytopenia, and elevated liver and myocardial enzymes.
  • Viremia and robust humoral immune responses (IgM, IgG, neutralizing antibodies) were detected in all infected animals.
  • Elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IFN-γ, TNF-α, etc.) and minor liver/kidney lesions were observed.

Conclusions:

  • Rhesus macaques are susceptible to SFTSV but develop a milder form of the disease compared to severe human cases.
  • This model offers a valuable platform for studying SFTSV pathogenesis and evaluating potential therapeutics.
