Voltammetry: Stripping Methods

1.3K
Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (ASV), Cathodic Stripping Voltammetry (CSV), and Adsorptive Stripping Voltammetry (AdSV) are electrochemical techniques used to determine trace amounts of analytes in solution. These methods involve applying a potential to an electrode and measuring the resulting current.
Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (ASV)
ASV is used to determine metals and metalloids at trace levels. It involves two steps: deposition and stripping. First, a negative potential is applied to the...

Summary

The double-sided perforated stripping disk (PSD) caused a significant pulp temperature increase during tooth stripping, while handheld stripper (HS) resulted in a minor rise. Both methods are safe for clinical use, with temperature changes below the critical threshold.

Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Dental Materials Science
  • Conservative Dentistry

Background:

  • Pulp chamber temperature changes during dental procedures are critical for pulp vitality.
  • Stripping techniques are used for interproximal enamel reduction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate and compare pulp chamber temperature variations during tooth stripping using two different techniques.

Main Methods:

  • Extracted human teeth (incisors, premolars, molars) were stripped using a double-sided perforated stripping disk (PSD) and a handheld stripper (HS).
  • Pulp chamber temperature was monitored using a J-type thermocouple during the procedures.

Main Results:

  • Both PSD and HS techniques caused a temperature rise in the pulp chamber.
  • The PSD technique resulted in significantly higher average temperature increases (2.48°C–2.64°C) compared to the HS technique (0.92°C–1.24°C).
  • All observed temperature variations remained below the critical threshold of 5.5°C.

Conclusions:

  • The PSD technique causes a significant increase in pulp temperature compared to HS, irrespective of tooth type.
  • Despite significant temperature rise with PSD, both techniques are considered clinically safe as temperature variations stay below critical levels.
