Patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) show increased stem cell mobilization during sleep, linked to disease severity. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy may reduce this mobilization.
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular Science
- Sleep Medicine
- Hematology
Background:
- Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) causes intermittent hypoxaemia, oxidative stress, and inflammation, potentially damaging vasculature.
- These insults may trigger repair mechanisms, including stem cell mobilization to peripheral blood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the nocturnal mobilization of CD34+ stem cells in patients with OSA.
Main Methods:
- Polysomnography was used to assess OSA severity (apnoea-hypopnoea index, AHI).
- Peripheral blood CD34+ cell and SDF-1α levels were measured before and after sleep.
- Stem cell mobilization was quantified by comparing morning and nighttime levels.
Main Results:
- Patients with OSA exhibited significantly higher nocturnal stem cell mobilization compared to controls.
- Mobilization correlated with OSA severity (AHI), BMI, and hypoxaemia parameters.
- Stem cell mobilization and SDF-1α levels decreased after 6 months of CPAP therapy.
Conclusions:
- Nocturnal CD34+ stem cell mobilization occurs in patients with OSA.
- This mobilization is associated with OSA severity and hypoxaemia.
- CPAP therapy may attenuate stem cell mobilization in OSA.
