Background:

A free online resource, WebPath, was developed to host general and subject-specific pathology practice examinations for health sciences students.
These examinations were made accessible via a public website, located four clicks from the homepage.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the usage patterns and performance of health sciences students on online pathology practice examinations.
To determine the effectiveness of different examination formats (general vs. subject-specific) and lengths on user engagement and scores.

Main Methods:

Multiple choice questions were implemented using HTML and JavaScript for timed, browser-based delivery.
A Perl script processed user responses, scored examinations, and logged results, including educational field, from June 2006 to January 2014.
Four general examinations (30 questions, 30 min) and 17 subject-specific examinations (10 questions, 15 min) were analyzed.

General examinations (31,639 accesses) had a 54% completion rate and an average score of 75%.
Subject-specific examinations (103,028 completions) demonstrated a 73% completion rate and an average score of 74%.
Higher completion rates were observed for shorter, subject-specific exams, and users identifying as MD/DO achieved higher average scores (75%).

Conclusions:

Shorter, subject-specific pathology examinations facilitated higher completion rates among health sciences students.
The performance data suggests that users completing the examinations were adequately prepared, utilizing the resource effectively for their pathology education.
Examination placement on the website significantly influenced usage, with top menu items receiving greater access.
