Cytomegalovirus Disease01:27

Cytomegalovirus Disease

87
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease is caused by human cytomegalovirus, a double-stranded DNA virus of the Herpesviridae family. While primary CMV infection is often asymptomatic in immunocompetent individuals, the virus can cause severe disease in neonates and immunocompromised patients. CMV is the most common cause of congenital viral infection in the United States, and a major pathogen in solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients.CMV is transmitted via bodily fluids, sexual...

Viral Recombination00:57

Viral Recombination

22.1K
Cells are sometimes infected by more than one virus at once. When two viruses disassemble to expose their genomes for replication in the same cell, similar regions of their genomes can pair together and exchange sequences in a process called recombination. Alternatively, viruses with segmented genomes can swap segments in a process called reassortment.

    Summary

Human herpes simplex virus type 1 was found in a juvenile gorilla in 2007, causing stomatitis. This case highlights the risk of pathogen transmission between humans and nonhuman primates.

    Area of Science:

    • Veterinary Medicine
    • Primate Health
    • Infectious Diseases

    Background:

    • Understanding zoonotic disease transmission is crucial for conservation efforts.
    • Gorillas are susceptible to various pathogens, including those shared with humans.

    Observation:

    • A juvenile eastern lowland gorilla (Gorilla beringei graueri) presented with stomatitis in 2007.
    • The affected gorilla had significant direct contact with human caretakers.

    Findings:

    • Human herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) was detected in the gorilla.
    • The virus caused severe stomatitis in the nonhuman primate.

    Implications:

    • This case confirms the potential for pathogen transfer from humans to nonhuman primates.
    • It underscores the importance of stringent biosecurity measures in facilities housing endangered species.
    • Further research into interspecies disease transmission is warranted to protect both human and animal populations.
