Summary

This study reports the first case of a hand metastasis from a sacral chordoma after carbon ion radiotherapy. Early systemic examination is crucial for chordoma patients due to the high risk of distant metastasis.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Orthopedic Oncology
  • Radiotherapy Research

Background:

  • Chordomas are rare, low-grade malignant tumors originating from notochordal remnants along the axial skeleton.
  • These tumors exhibit slow growth, a prolonged disease course, and a tendency for local recurrence.
  • A significant proportion (up to 40%) of non-cranial chordomas are known to metastasize.

Observation:

  • This report details the first documented instance of a hand metastasis.
  • The metastasis originated from a conventional sacral chordoma.
  • The patient had previously undergone carbon ion radiotherapy.

Findings:

  • The case highlights an unusual presentation of chordoma metastasis to the hand.
  • It underscores the potential for distant spread even after radiotherapy.

  • This metastasis occurred in the context of a sacral chordoma.
  • Implications:

    • The findings emphasize the importance of thorough systemic examination in chordoma management.
    • Early detection of distant metastases may improve patient prognosis.
    • This case expands the understanding of chordoma metastatic patterns and treatment implications.
