Background:

Compulsory outpatient treatment (co-pt) was introduced in Denmark in 2010.
The goal of co-pt is to ensure treatment adherence, decrease involuntary hospitalizations, and enhance quality of life for individuals with severe psychiatric conditions.
Co-pt has been utilized in 33 cases to date.

Observation:

This report details a patient diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
The patient experienced recurrent severe psychotic symptoms post-discharge due to non-compliance with treatment.
The patient had a history of multiple hospital admissions.

Findings:

Within one year of initiating co-pt, the patient avoided hospitalization and showed improved overall functioning.
Following the cessation of co-pt, the patient experienced a rapid relapse into psychotic symptoms.
This suggests a direct correlation between co-pt adherence and clinical stability.

Implications:

Compulsory outpatient treatment may be an effective strategy for managing severe mental illness and preventing relapse.
Sustained treatment adherence is crucial for long-term recovery and improved quality of life in psychiatric patients.
The findings highlight the importance of continued monitoring and support within compulsory treatment frameworks.
