Summary

A novel aortic root wrapped procedure offers a safe and effective surgical option for aortic root aneurysm and ectasia. This minimally invasive technique shows excellent survival rates and significant reduction in aortic dimensions.

Background:

  • Developing simple, effective, and low-risk surgical interventions is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the aortic root wrapped procedure for treating aortic root aneurysm or ectasia.

Main Methods:

  • Fifteen patients underwent aortic root wrapped angioplasty between June 2008 and September 2010.
  • Procedures involved artificial blood vessel wrapping combined with aortic valve plasty or replacement.
  • Patients had Marfan's syndrome or aortic sinus aneurysm with moderate to severe aortic valve disease.

Main Results:

  • Zero perioperative and late mortality observed in all 15 patients.
  • Significant reduction in aortic annulus and sinus diameters post-procedure (P < .01 and P < .001, respectively).
  • Excellent short-term outcomes with 12 patients having normal aortic valve function and 3 with trace regurgitation.

Conclusions:

  • Aortic root wrapped procedures are a viable alternative for aortic sinus aneurysm and associated valve disease.
  • This technique demonstrates favorable safety and efficacy in selected patient cohorts.
  • The procedure leads to significant aortic remodeling and preserves cardiac function.
