Background:

Single-switch scanning is a vital communication method for individuals with disabilities.
Existing methods may present challenges in optimizing text entry rate (TER).
Enhancing TER is crucial for effective communication and user engagement.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and evaluate a method for adjusting single-switch scanning interface settings.
To investigate the impact of optimized settings on user text entry rate.
To improve the efficiency of communication for single-switch scanning users.

Main Methods:

Developed a novel method for adjusting single-switch scanning interface parameters.
Recruited nine participants who utilize single-switch scanning for communication.
Evaluated the method by measuring text entry rate before and after setting adjustments.

Main Results:

Text entry rates (TER) improved by an average of 120% (p = 0.003).
All participants demonstrated at least a 40% increase in TER.
Five participants experienced over a 100% increase in TER, with average rates rising from 1.42 to 2.72 words per minute.

Conclusions:

The developed method effectively enhances text entry rate in single-switch scanning.
Optimized settings offer a significant improvement in communication efficiency for users.
This advancement holds potential for improving the quality of life for individuals relying on AAC.
