Summary

Animal hoarding appears uncommon in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients, with only 0.5% affected. Further research is needed to understand the psychopathology of animal hoarding and its relation to OCD.

Background:

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition.
  • Severe hoarding is considered rare in OCD samples.
  • The prevalence of animal hoarding within OCD populations remains unclear.

Observation:

  • A university OCD clinic reviewed 420 patient charts.
  • The study aimed to determine the prevalence of animal hoarding in OCD patients.
  • Chart review was the primary methodology.

Findings:

  • Less than 0.5% of the OCD sample (2 out of 420 patients) exhibited animal hoarding.
  • Only one patient with animal hoarding also had obsessive-compulsive symptoms.
  • Both patients collected inanimate objects, showed poor insight, and responded inadequately to treatment.

Implications:

  • Current findings suggest a limited association between animal hoarding and OCD.
  • Further investigation with larger cohorts is necessary.
  • Defining the psychopathological profile and nosological classification of animal hoarding requires more research.
