Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate chronobiological and mood characteristics in patients with multiple sclerosis.
  • To explore potential relationships between mood, chronobiology, and disease characteristics.

Main Methods:

  • Assessed mood using the Profile of Mood States (POMS) and chronotype with the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ).
  • Compared 75 MS patients (relapsing-remitting and secondary progressive) with 50 healthy controls.
  • Employed univariate and structural equation modeling to analyze variable interconnections.

Main Results:

  • MS patients reported increased depression-dejection and fatigue-inertia compared to healthy individuals.
  • No significant differences in circadian preferences were observed between MS patients and controls.
  • Glatiramer acetate and other treatments were associated with greater functional impairment and negative mood effects compared to interferon-beta, potentially due to longer disease duration and higher symptom severity.

Conclusions:

  • Gender emerged as a significant predictor of mood characteristics in the structural equation model.
