The bioenteric intragastric balloon (BIB) is an effective tool for weight loss in obese patients. When used with dedicated patients, it significantly reduces obesity-related health issues with minimal complications.

Background:

  • Obesity is a global epidemic and a major risk factor for numerous health problems.
  • Traditional weight loss methods like diet and exercise have limited success in many obese individuals.
  • The bioenteric intragastric balloon (BIB) offers an alternative approach to obesity management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of the bioenteric intragastric balloon (BIB) for weight reduction.
  • To assess the impact of BIB on obesity-related comorbidities.
  • To share clinical experience with BIB insertion and management.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective evaluation of the first 100 patients undergoing BIB insertion between January 2009 and September 2012.
  • Patients had a body mass index (BMI) over 30 kg/m² and were aged 17-55.
  • BIB was inserted under monitored anesthesia care, filled with 500-700 ml saline, and removed after 6-12 months. Patients received medication and lifestyle counseling.

Main Results:

  • Weight loss varied by patient compliance, ranging from 7 kg in uncooperative patients to 39 kg in compliant patients.
  • Significant improvements were observed in diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and fatty liver disease.
