    Area of Science:

    • Computer Vision
    • Image Processing
    • Medical Imaging

    Background:

    • Interactive image segmentation commonly uses user-defined region or boundary constraints.
    • Existing methods have complementary strengths and weaknesses, leading to user effort and suboptimal segmentation.
    • There is a need for integrated approaches that leverage the benefits of both region and boundary-based segmentation techniques.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To propose a novel hybrid interactive image segmentation paradigm using "live markers".
    • To introduce four new techniques: LiveMarkers, RiverCut, LiveCut, and RiverMarkers.
    • To demonstrate improved segmentation accuracy and reduced user effort in 2D and 3D image domains.

    Main Methods:

    • Developed a hybrid paradigm where boundary-tracking segments generate internal and external markers for region-based delineation.
    • Implemented LiveMarkers combining live-wire-on-the-fly (LWOF) with image foresting transform with seed competition (IFT-SC).
    • Implemented RiverCut using Riverbed for boundary segments as markers for Graph Cuts by Min-Cut/Max-Flow (GCMF).

    Main Results:

    • LiveMarkers effectively addresses the leaking problem of IFT-SC using LWOF-generated markers.
    • RiverCut overcomes limitations of GCMF on poorly defined boundaries using Riverbed-generated markers.
    • LiveCut and RiverMarkers show improved segmentation, preventing issues like GCMF's shrinking bias, even when approaches are not complementary.

    Conclusions:

    • The proposed hybrid paradigm effectively integrates region and boundary-based segmentation, subsuming both approaches.
    • Live markers significantly enhance interactive segmentation, reducing user effort and improving accuracy.
    • The methodology extends boundary tracking to 3D imaging and speeds up manual marker placement.
