Summary

Migraine patients show impaired central auditory processing (CAP), particularly in gap detection and duration discrimination. These findings suggest a link between migraine and auditory deficits.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Audiology
  • Neurology

Background:

  • Migraine is a prevalent neurological disorder.
  • Central Auditory Processing (CAP) deficits may be associated with neurological conditions.
  • Previous research has not fully elucidated CAP performance in migraineurs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare CAP performance between individuals with migraine (with and without aura) and healthy controls.
  • To identify specific auditory processing deficits associated with migraine.

Main Methods:

  • Forty-one participants (18-40 years) were recruited: 11 migraine with aura, 15 migraine without aura, and 15 healthy controls.
  • Central auditory processing was assessed using the Gaps-in-Noise (GIN) test, Duration Pattern test (DPT), and Dichotic Digits Test (DDT).
  • Participants were diagnosed based on the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3 beta) criteria.

Main Results:

  • Migraine patients (both with and without aura) performed significantly worse than controls on the GIN test (right ear, p=.006; left ear, p=.005) and DPT (p<.001).
  • No significant differences were observed in the Dichotic Digits Test (DDT) between groups for either ear (right ear, p=.362; left ear, p=.190).

Conclusions:

  • Migraine is associated with impaired auditory gap detection and duration discrimination.
  • Individuals with migraine exhibit deficits in temporal processing, including temporal resolution and ordering.
  • Central auditory processing impairment may be a contributing factor or consequence of migraine.
