Health role models in the fire service can inspire behavior change. This case study shows that firefighter role models improved their own health and positively influenced colleagues.
Area of Science:
- Occupational Health
- Behavioral Science
- Public Health
Background:
- Firefighters face unique health challenges and risks.
- Workplace health promotion is crucial for this demographic.
- Developing effective health interventions in high-risk professions is essential.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop health role models within the fire service.
- To improve the personal health of these role models.
- To facilitate health behavior change in other firefighters through role model influence.
Main Methods:
- Recruited three Maryland fire service leaders as health role models.
- Participants engaged in a year-long program focused on nutrition, fitness, and weight management.
- Collected quantitative health data (weight, blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol) and qualitative interview data.
Main Results:
- Completed participants achieved significant reductions in body weight, glucose, and blood pressure.
- Role models reported increased self-efficacy and felt their success inspired colleagues.
- Qualitative data indicated role models enhanced self-regulation and social support among firefighters.
Conclusions:
- Role models show promise for improving health outcomes in the fire service.
- Workplace interventions leveraging role models can be effective.
- This strategy may enhance firefighter self-efficacy and promote healthier behaviors.
