Ectopic adrenal cortical rests, rarely found in adults within the spermatic cord, were incidentally discovered in the rete testis during surgery for an undescended testis. This rare finding highlights potential complications from adrenal tissue in this location.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Urology
- Pathology
Background:
- Heterotopic adrenal cortex is typically found in the kidney, retroperitoneum, and spermatic cord.
- It is more common in pediatric patients and infrequently observed in adults.
Observation:
- A case presented with right inguinal swelling and pain, revealing an absent right testis via ultrasonogram.
- Surgical exploration for an undescended testis led to the incidental discovery of ectopic adrenal cortical tissue in the rete testis.
Findings:
- Microscopic examination confirmed an ectopic adrenal cortical rest adjacent to atrophic testicular tissue.
- While indolent in this instance, ectopic adrenal tissue carries the potential for pathological transformation.
Implications:
- This case underscores the rarity of ectopic adrenal tissue in adults at this specific site.
- Awareness of this condition is crucial due to its potential to cause complications if left untreated.

Adrenal Gland Disorders
Adrenal insufficiency, characterized by insufficient cortisol and aldosterone production, leads to conditions like Addison's disease. This disorder, affecting the adrenal cortex, exhibits symptoms such as skin bronzing, dehydration, low blood pressure, fatigue, and weight loss. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia, a genetic ailment causing...
Anatomy of the Adrenal Glands
These glands possess a distinctive yellow tinge due to the stored cholesterol and fatty acids required for hormone synthesis. They are encased in a fibrous capsule and cushioned by fat.
The adrenal gland comprises two distinct...

Hormones of the Adrenal Glands
The adrenal cortex, a powerhouse of hormone synthesis, generates over two dozen corticosteroid hormones. The zona glomerulosa produces mineralocorticoids, exemplified by aldosterone, influencing the electrolyte composition of body fluids. The synthesis of glucocorticoids such as cortisol and...
