Summary

Torpedo maculopathy, a rare benign eye condition, shows retinal degeneration and detachment on optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans. This study provides the first OCT descriptions of this disorder.

Background:

  • Torpedo maculopathy, also known as solitary hypopigmented nevus, is a rare, benign disorder.
  • No prior optical coherence tomography (OCT) descriptions of this condition exist in medical literature.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the optical coherence tomography (OCT) findings in two pediatric cases of torpedo maculopathy.
  • To characterize the retinal and choroidal changes associated with torpedo maculopathy using OCT.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of ophthalmologic examinations, including retinography, OCT, and visual field testing.
  • Analysis of 5-year follow-up data for two female patients (ages 12 and 13).

Main Results:

  • Both patients presented with a hypopigmented, fishtail-shaped lesion temporal to the macula.
  • OCT revealed retinal thinning, retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) hyperreflectivity, and choroidal hyperreflectivity in case 1.
  • OCT showed retinal atrophy, photoreceptor layer absence, serous neurosensory detachment, and increased RPE reflectivity in case 2.

Conclusions:

  • OCT imaging demonstrated variable retinal degeneration in both torpedo maculopathy cases.
  • One case exhibited a serous retinal detachment, highlighting the potential for structural changes in this condition.
