Bilateral macular retinoschisis in a patient with x-linked alport syndrome
1From the Department of Ophthalmology, Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel.
Purpose:
To report a case of bilateral macular retinoschisis in a patient with X-linked Alport syndrome.
Methods:
Observational case report. A 57-year-old woman with X-linked Alport syndrome who presented with bilateral macular retinoschisis, which was demonstrated by high-resolution optical coherence tomography.
Results:
The patient's visual acuity was only mildly decreased, and she was observed for a period of 30 months.
Conclusion:
This is the first and only report of bilateral macular retinoschisis in a patient with Alport syndrome. We suggest that the basement membrane of Bruch's membrane and the retinal pigment epithelium may be impaired and permit passage of fluid into the retina resulting in retinoschisis.
