An extensive case of acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy

Purpose:
To report a case of extensive acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy (APMPPE).
Methods:
Case report.
Results:
An 18-year-old girl was admitted and treated with intravenous acyclovir and intravitreal gancyclovir for presumed acute retinal necrosis. As the lesions faded and vision improved, the findings became more consistent with an extensive form of APMPPE.
Conclusion:
Acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy can present very aggressively early in its course. Despite macular involvement, as in this patient, vision can improve significantly.
