Varicose Veins II: Diagnostic Studies and Interprofessional Care

307
Varicose veins, or varicosities, develop when the valves in the veins, which control blood flow, weaken or damage. It causes blood to pool and the veins to enlarge. Understanding the clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches, and management options for varicose veins is crucial for effective treatment and relief.Clinical manifestationsClinical manifestations of varicose veins include a heavy, achy feeling or pain after prolonged standing or sitting. This discomfort can often be relieved by...

Summary

Virtual reality training for laparoscopic varicocelectomy reduced operative time during the learning phase and accelerated improvement. However, it did not significantly shorten the overall learning curve for this surgical procedure.

Area of Science:

  • Surgical Education
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Medical Simulation

Background:

  • Laparoscopic varicocelectomy is a complex procedure requiring extensive training.
  • Traditional training methods may have limitations in skill acquisition efficiency.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of virtual reality (VR) training on the learning curve of laparoscopic varicocelectomy.
  • To compare surgical outcomes between trainees using VR simulation and traditional trainer boxes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 1326 laparoscopic varicocelectomy cases from 16 participants.
  • Division of participants into VR training group and traditional trainer box group.
  • Statistical analysis of operation time, number of cases per learning stage, and complication rates.

Main Results:

  • VR training group showed significantly shorter operation times in the learning stage (P<.00001).
  • VR training group required fewer cases to reach the improving stage (P=.005).
  • No significant difference in overall learning curve length or postoperative hydrocele rates was observed.

Conclusions:

  • Virtual reality training effectively reduces operative time and accelerates skill acquisition in the initial stages of laparoscopic varicocelectomy.
  • While VR enhances early learning, it does not shorten the total learning curve duration as anticipated.
  • VR training shows promise for improving early surgical performance in laparoscopic varicocelectomy.
