Exergames show promise for motivating older adults in rehabilitation, but current evidence on improving physical function is inconclusive due to methodological limitations. More high-quality studies are needed to confirm benefits.

Background:

  • Virtual reality (VR) exergames are increasingly explored as complementary tools in rehabilitation.
  • Evidence for their effectiveness in the older adult population remains limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the effects of exergames on physical functioning in older adults.
  • To summarize findings from randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

Main Methods:

  • A systematic search of multiple databases (EMBASE, MEDLINE, PsyInfo, Cochrane, PEDro, ISI Web of Knowledge) was conducted.
  • Thirteen RCTs were included and analyzed via critical review and methodological quality assessment using the PEDro scale.

Main Results:

  • The Nintendo Wii was the most common platform used in the studies.
  • The Timed Up and Go test was the most frequent measure of physical functioning.
  • Most studies (8/13) had methodological quality issues (PEDro score < 5), and results regarding physical function benefits were inconclusive due to varied protocols and durations.

Conclusions:

  • While exergames offer a positive motivational aspect for older adults in rehabilitation, their benefits for physical function are not yet conclusively proven.
  • Further research with improved methodological quality and external validity is required to establish stronger scientific evidence.
