Cancer Prevention02:59

Cancer Prevention

8.7K
Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer.

Treatment Resistant Cancers02:56

Treatment Resistant Cancers

3.9K
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. A cancer cell is genetically unstable and hence can mutate faster. They can also modify their microenvironment and escape immune surveillance. The difficulties in treating cancer are further compounded by the emergence of rapid resistance to anticancer drugs. The most common ways to attain resistance in cancer cells include alteration in drug transport and metabolism, modification of drug target, elevated DNA damage response, or...

Cancer Survival Analysis01:21

Cancer Survival Analysis

857
Cancer survival analysis focuses on quantifying and interpreting the time from a key starting point, such as diagnosis or the initiation of treatment, to a specific endpoint, such as remission or death. This analysis provides critical insights into treatment effectiveness and factors that influence patient outcomes, helping to shape clinical decisions and guide prognostic evaluations. A cornerstone of oncology research, survival analysis tackles the challenges of skewed, non-normally...

Cancer Therapies02:49

Cancer Therapies

10.9K
Cancer therapies are various modes of treatment, such as surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy that are administered to cancer patients.
However, cancer treatments can pose several challenges, as therapies used to kill cancer cells are generally also toxic to normal cells. Moreover, cancer cells mutate rapidly and can develop resistance to chemical agents or radiation therapy. Besides, all types of cancer cells may not respond to the same therapy. Some cancer cells respond to one...

Heart Failure VII: Nursing Interventions

771
The first step in nursing management of a patient with heart failure involves thoroughly assessing the patient's medical history.Subjective Data: Obtain the patient's medical history of coronary artery disease, hypertension, myocardial infarction, and symptoms like dyspnea, orthopnea, and paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea. Objective Data: Conduct a physical examination to identify findings such as jugular vein distention, pulmonary crackles, tachycardia, murmurs, peripheral edema, and vital signs,...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Exercise Science
  • Clinical Trials

Background:

  • Cancer cachexia is a complex syndrome involving significant skeletal muscle loss, leading to functional decline.
  • Physical exercise is hypothesized to mitigate cancer cachexia through mechanisms like improved muscle metabolism and reduced inflammation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of exercise interventions on lean body mass in cancer cachexia patients.
  • To evaluate exercise safety and acceptability in this population.
  • To explore how exercise characteristics influence outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases (CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, etc.) up to June 2014.
  • Included were randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing exercise to usual care or no treatment in adults with cancer cachexia.
  • Data extraction and relevance assessment were performed by two independent reviewers.

Main Results:

  • A total of 3154 references were screened, with 16 full-text articles reviewed.
  • No randomized controlled trials met the inclusion criteria for this review.

Conclusions:

  • There is currently insufficient evidence to support the use of exercise for cancer cachexia.
  • High-quality RCTs are necessary to establish the safety and efficacy of exercise interventions.
  • Ongoing studies are anticipated to provide further insights, with plans for a future review update.
