Background:

  • Echocardiography provides age-related reference ranges for left ventricular (LV) diastolic parameters, but similar data is lacking for cardiac MRI.
  • Assessing LV diastolic function is crucial for diagnosing various cardiac conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the capability of phase-contrast MRI (PC-MRI) in detecting sub-clinical age-related variations in LV diastolic parameters.
  • To establish age-related reference ranges for PC-MRI diastolic parameters.
  • To identify independent factors associated with these age-related variations.

Main Methods:

  • 100 healthy volunteers underwent MRI with simultaneous blood pressure measurements.
  • LV mass and volumes were assessed.
  • Semiautomated PC-MRI analysis quantified early transmitral and atrial peak filling flow-rates and volumes, deceleration time, isovolumic relaxation time, and early myocardial longitudinal peak velocity.

Main Results:

  • PC-MRI diastolic parameters demonstrated high reproducibility.
  • Age was strongly and independently associated with peak myocardial velocity (E') and flow-rate parameters (p < 0.0001).
  • LV relaxation parameters were independently associated with LV remodeling and myocardial wall thickness (p < 0.01).

Conclusions:

  • Age-related reference ranges for LV diastolic parameters using PC-MRI are provided.
  • PC-MRI can reliably characterize sub-clinical age-related variations in diastolic function in healthy individuals.
  • Incorporating these diastolic parameters into clinical MRI exams can enhance diagnostic capabilities for conditions like cardiomyopathy and heart failure.
