Summary

Hypothermia, a condition of low body temperature, can cause neurological issues. In patients with multiple sclerosis, recurrent hypothermia and coma occurred without observable hypothalamic damage.

Background:

  • Hypothermia (core temperature <35°C) has diverse etiologies and significant neurological sequelae.
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease affecting the central nervous system.

Observation:

  • Three patients with long-standing, definite multiple sclerosis experienced recurrent episodes of coma and hypothermia.
  • Neuropathological examination of the hypothalamus in one patient revealed no structural abnormalities.

Findings:

  • The presented cases suggest a potential link between multiple sclerosis and unexplained episodes of hypothermia and coma.
  • Absence of hypothalamic pathology indicates that the mechanism of hypothermia in these MS patients may not be due to structural damage.

Implications:

  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the pathophysiology of hypothermia in multiple sclerosis.
  • Understanding this association could lead to improved diagnostic and management strategies for neurological patients presenting with thermoregulatory dysfunction.
