Summary

Pathogen-derived resistance (PDR) offers a novel strategy to protect valuable orchid plants like Phalaenopsis and Dendrobium from damaging viruses such as Cymbidium mosaic virus (CymMV) and Odotoglossum ringspot virus (ORSV). This method uses viral genes to induce plant resistance, safeguarding the orchid industry.

Area of Science:

  • Plant Pathology
  • Biotechnology
  • Horticulture

Background:

  • Orchid plants, including Phalaenopsis and Dendrobium, are economically significant ornamental species globally.
  • These orchids are highly vulnerable to viral infections, notably Cymbidium mosaic virus (CymMV) and Odotoglossum ringspot virus (ORSV).
  • Viral diseases cause substantial economic losses in the global orchid industry.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the fundamental mechanisms of pathogen-derived resistance (PDR) for plant viral protection.
  • To illustrate the application of PDR in developing virus-resistant orchid plants.
  • To address the challenge of generating effective methods against viral infections in orchids.

Main Methods:

  • Leveraging optimized orchid transformation biotechnological techniques.
  • Applying the concept of pathogen-derived resistance (PDR).
  • Introducing virus-derived genes into host orchid plants.

Main Results:

  • Successful generation of orchid plants exhibiting resistance to viral infection.
  • Demonstration of RNA- or protein-mediated resistance induced by PDR.
  • Validation of PDR as a viable strategy for orchid viral disease management.

Conclusions:

  • Pathogen-derived resistance (PDR) is an effective strategy for conferring viral resistance in orchids.
  • The application of PDR, coupled with advanced biotechnology, offers a promising solution to protect commercially valuable orchid species.
  • This approach mitigates economic losses in the orchid industry caused by CymMV and ORSV.
