Background:

  • The relationship between morphologic left ventricular (LV) changes and diastolic function in elite athletes remains unclear.
  • This study aimed to investigate LV diastolic properties in a large cohort of Olympic athletes versus untrained controls.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To define normal Doppler echocardiographic and Doppler tissue imaging parameters for diastolic function in elite athletes.
  • To establish reference values for the clinical assessment of the athlete's heart.

Main Methods:

  • Two-dimensional echocardiography, Doppler echocardiography, and Doppler tissue imaging were performed on 1,145 Olympic athletes and 154 controls.
  • Participants were free of cardiovascular disease.

Main Results:

  • Athletes showed significantly lower A velocities and longer isovolumic relaxation and deceleration times compared to controls.
  • Doppler tissue imaging revealed lower e' and a' velocities in athletes, with mildly higher E/e' ratios.
  • Endurance athletes displayed the lowest A and a' velocities and highest E/A ratios; gender differences in diastolic parameters were also observed.

Conclusions:

  • This study establishes normal reference values for diastolic function parameters in elite athletes using echocardiography and Doppler tissue imaging.
  • These reference values can aid in the clinical evaluation of athlete's heart and understanding physiological cardiac adaptations.
