Background:

The role of tonsillectomy in treating immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) is debated.
This meta-analysis evaluates tonsillectomy as an adjunct or independent treatment for IgAN.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the efficacy of tonsillectomy in improving clinical remission and reducing end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in patients with IgAN.

Main Methods:

A meta-analysis of 14 prospective and retrospective studies involving 1,794 patients with IgAN.
Searched PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for studies comparing tonsillectomy with or without other treatments.

Main Results:

Tonsillectomy significantly increased the odds of clinical remission (pooled OR, 3.40; P<0.001).
Tonsillectomy combined with steroid therapy showed superior remission rates compared to steroid therapy alone.
Tonsillectomy was associated with decreased odds of ESRD (pooled OR, 0.25; P<0.001).

Conclusions:

Tonsillectomy may be an effective therapy for inducing clinical remission in IgAN patients.
Tonsillectomy can reduce the progression to ESRD in patients with IgAN.
Limitations include the predominantly retrospective nature of included studies and potential confounding variables.
