Background:

  • Abscisic acid (ABA), a phytohormone found in animals including humans, exhibits diverse bioactivities.
  • ABA and retinoic acid (RA) are carotenoid derivatives; RA is known to enhance rodent spatial memory.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of ABA on spatial learning and memory in young rats.
  • To evaluate ABA's pharmacokinetic profile in the rat brain.

Main Methods:

  • Young rats received 20mg/kg ABA for six weeks.
  • Behavioral assessments included the Morris water maze (MWM), Y-maze, open field test, and elevated plus-maze.
  • Pharmacokinetic analysis assessed ABA distribution, absorption, and elimination in the brain.

Main Results:

  • ABA treatment significantly improved spatial memory in the MWM, evidenced by increased time in and entries to the target quadrant and reduced latency.
  • ABA enhanced exploratory activity in the Y-maze, decreasing latency to the novel arm and increasing total entries and distance traveled.
  • No significant effects of ABA were observed in the open field test or elevated plus-maze test.

Conclusions:

  • Exogenous ABA is rapidly absorbed and slowly eliminated in the rat brain.
  • ABA administration shows potential for enhancing spatial memory and learning in young rats.
  • ABA may improve exploratory behavior, but does not appear to affect general locomotor activity or anxiety levels.
