Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

767
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy01:24

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy

754
Cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBTs) are grounded in the belief that our thoughts profoundly influence our emotions and actions. Advocates of CBT emphasize three core assumptions: first, that cognitions are identifiable and measurable; second, that they are central to psychological functioning; and third, that irrational or maladaptive beliefs can be replaced with rational and adaptive ones. This transformative approach to therapy has paved the way for specific models such as Albert...

Electroconvulsive Therapy01:30

Electroconvulsive Therapy

2.4K
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), or shock therapy, remains a critical biomedical intervention for severe, treatment-resistant depression. While its origins can be traced back to Hippocrates' observations that malaria-induced convulsions alleviated mental illness, modern ECT has evolved significantly from its earlier, more primitive applications. First introduced in 1938 by Ugo Cerletti and his colleagues, ECT involves inducing controlled seizures using electrical currents. In its early...

Operant Conditioning Intervention01:24

Operant Conditioning Intervention

690
Operant conditioning serves as a foundational principle in therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying maladaptive behaviors. Central to this approach is the notion that behaviors, both adaptive and maladaptive, are learned through reinforcement. By analyzing the environmental factors that reinforce problematic behaviors, clinicians can design interventions to weaken these reinforcements and replace maladaptive behaviors with healthier alternatives.
In operant conditioning, behaviors that are...

Behavior Therapy01:22

Behavior Therapy

1.0K
Behavior therapy incorporates diverse techniques rooted in classical conditioning principles to address maladaptive behaviors and anxiety disorders. These methods aim to reduce avoidance behaviors, foster adaptive coping mechanisms, and alter associations between stimuli and responses, making them effective in a wide range of therapeutic contexts.
Exposure therapy is a cornerstone of behavioral treatment for anxiety disorders. It involves systematic exposure to feared stimuli, either in real...

Antidepressant Drugs: MAOIs and Other Agents01:23

Antidepressant Drugs: MAOIs and Other Agents

1.3K
Atypical antidepressants, including bupropion (Wellbutrin), mirtazapine (Remeron), nefazodone (Serzone), trazodone (Desyrel), and vilazodone (Viibryd), offer unique mechanisms of action. Bupropion weakly inhibits dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake, aiding depression treatment and smoking cessation, with a low risk of sexual dysfunction. Mirtazapine enhances serotonin and norepinephrine neurotransmission, leading to sedation, increased appetite, and weight gain. As a result, it helps treat...

Summary

Behavioral Activation therapy for return to work (BA-W) improved vocational functioning in adults with chronic depression who had responded to medication. This psychotherapy may help address residual disability after pharmacotherapy.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Occupational Health

Background:

  • Chronic depression leads to significant impairment in work, relationships, and health.
  • This impairment often persists even after medication-induced remission of depressive symptoms.
  • Vocational disability is a key challenge in managing chronic depression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To adapt and test Behavioral Activation therapy with a goal of return to work (BA-W).
  • To evaluate the efficacy of BA-W in individuals with chronic depression who responded to medication but remained unemployed.
  • To assess the impact of BA-W on work functioning and related outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Sixteen adults (aged 18-65) with chronic depression (Dysthymic Disorder or chronic Major Depression) participated.
  • Participants received 12 weeks of individual, manual-driven BA-W.
  • Functioning was measured at intake, post-treatment, and 24-week follow-up.

Main Results:

  • 87% of participants completed the BA-W therapy.
  • Significant increases were observed in work-related activity hours, paid work hours, and work productivity.
  • Improvements were also noted in earned income, behavioral avoidance, and global functioning.

Conclusions:

  • This pilot study suggests BA-W is effective in improving vocational impairment in chronic depression.
  • BA-W may offer a significant advancement in treating residual disability post-pharmacotherapy.
  • Further investigation via a randomized controlled trial is warranted.
