Sexual dysfunction and dissatisfaction with sexual life are common in chronic hepatitis C virus patients. These conditions are linked to depression, anxiety, and reduced quality of life, necessitating screening and management.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Hepatology
- Sexual Medicine
Background:
- Chronic hepatitis C virus (CHC) infection significantly impacts patient well-being.
- Sexual dysfunction (SD) and dissatisfaction with sexual life (DSL) are prevalent but understudied in CHC patients.
- Psychopathological factors, including fatigue, impulsiveness, and psychiatric comorbidities, may influence sexual health in CHC.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the prevalence of SD and DSL in CHC patients.
- To identify psychopathological, clinical, and sociodemographic factors associated with SD and DSL in this population.
- To explore the relationship between SD, DSL, and health-related quality of life (HRQL) in CHC patients.
Main Methods:
- A cohort of male and female CHC patients from an outpatient referral center was assessed.
- Utilized validated instruments including the Brief Fatigue Inventory, Barrat Impulsiveness Scale, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAM-A), and WHOQOL-BREF.
- Employed structured psychiatric interviews (Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview) and multivariate ordinal linear regression analysis.
Main Results:
- High prevalence of SD (57.1% by BDI, 51.4% by HAM-A) and DSL (32.4%) was observed in CHC patients.
- SD was associated with older age, female gender, specific viral genotypes, interferon-α use, impulsiveness, depressive symptoms, certain medication use, and lower HRQL.
- DSL was linked to depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, antidepressant use, and reduced HRQL.
Conclusions:
- SD and DSL are highly prevalent in CHC patients, significantly associated with psychological distress and impaired HRQL.
- Depressive symptoms and antidepressant use emerged as key factors correlating with both SD and DSL.
- Routine screening and integrated management of SD and DSL are crucial for enhancing medical care and improving the overall HRQL of CHC patients.
