Global Climate Change01:50

Global Climate Change

29.9K
Throughout its ~4.5 billion year history, the Earth has experienced periods of warming and cooling. However, the current drastic increase in global temperatures is well outside of the Earth’s cyclic norms, and evidence for human-caused global climate change is compelling. Paleoclimatology, the study of ancient climate conditions, provides ample evidence for human-caused global climate change by comparing recent conditions with those in the past.

Group Polarization01:01

Group Polarization

39.5K
Group polarization is the strengthening of an original group attitude following the discussion of views within a group (Teger & Pruitt, 1967). That is, if a group initially favors a viewpoint, after discussion the group consensus is likely a stronger endorsement of the viewpoint. Conversely, if the group was initially opposed to a viewpoint, group discussion would likely lead to stronger opposition.

What is Climate?01:16

What is Climate?

21.6K
Climate refers to the prevailing weather conditions in a specific area over an extended period. As the saying goes, “Climate is what you expect. Weather is what you get.” Climate is influenced by geographic factors, such as latitude, terrain, and proximity to bodies of water.

Confirmation Biases01:31

Confirmation Biases

8.6K
The confirmation bias is the tendency to focus on information that confirms our existing beliefs and ignore information that is inconsistent with our expectations. For example, if you think that your professor is not very nice, you notice all of the instances of rude behavior exhibited by the professor while ignoring the countless pleasant interactions he is involved in on a daily basis. Have you ever fallen prey to the confirmation bias, either as the source or target of such bias?

Microbes and Climate Change01:27

Microbes and Climate Change

73
Microorganisms are pivotal agents in Earth's biogeochemical cycles, significantly influencing climate dynamics through their metabolic activities. These microbes modulate the levels of key greenhouse gases by both contributing to and helping mitigate climate change.Microbial Contributions to Greenhouse Gas EmissionsRising global temperatures accelerate microbial metabolism, which, in turn, speeds up the decomposition of organic matter. This process releases carbon dioxide (CO₂) through...

Framing Effects03:26

Framing Effects

8.1K
Information is everywhere and its presentation—such as how and when items are presented—can impact our perceptions and decisions surrounding the info. This broad concept umbrellas framing effects—influences that occur due to the way information is framed in its appearance, whether it’s purely the order or the specific wording of a message. Let’s take a look at numerous ways in which two versions of something can objectively say the same thing, yet we respond in...

Area of Science:

  • Environmental Science
  • Political Science
  • Media Studies

Background:

  • Public opinion on global warming is influenced by news media, but empirical evidence is limited.
  • Understanding this relationship is crucial for effective climate change communication.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the link between news media coverage and public concern about global warming.
  • To investigate political polarization in public opinion related to climate change news.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from the 2006 General Social Survey.
  • Conducted a content analysis of newspaper coverage from the same period.
  • Examined the relationship between the general news climate and public concern.

Main Results:

  • Found increased news coverage correlated with growing divergence between Democrats and Republicans on global warming.
  • Observed partisan reactivity to coverage from different news outlets.
  • Identified politically motivated, biased processing of news information.

Conclusions:

  • News media significantly contributes to political polarization on global warming.
  • Partisan responses to news coverage highlight biased information processing.
  • Further research needed on media's role in shaping climate change opinions.
