Summary

Spanish science journalists often downplay pseudoscience risks, revealing a lack of clear media policies. Many journalists believe insufficient scientific training among editors fuels the spread of false knowledge in media.

Pseudoscience poses societal risks and is a growing concern in Spain.
Understanding its presence in media is crucial for informed public discourse.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore Spanish science journalists' perceptions of pseudoscience.
To evaluate how pseudoscience is handled in Spanish media practices.

Main Methods:

Conducted interviews and questionnaires with 49 Spanish science journalists.
Analyzed journalistic practices concerning pseudoscience.

Main Results:

Identified a lack of specific editorial policies addressing pseudoscience.
Revealed that many journalists underestimate the threat of pseudoscience in media.
Cited insufficient scientific training of editors as a factor in pseudoscience proliferation.

Conclusions:

Spanish media lacks robust strategies to combat pseudoscience.
Journalistic and editorial training in science is needed to mitigate pseudoscience's impact.
