    Modern oral contraceptive pills (OCP) do not appear to affect nasal airflow or nasal patency in women. This study found no significant impact on Peak Nasal Inspiratory Flow (PNIF) values, suggesting lower estrogen doses are safe for nasal function.

    Background:

    • Early oral contraceptive pills (OCP) with high estrogen levels were associated with nasal obstruction in up to 40% of users.
    • Recent research suggests OCP may not significantly impact nasal patency.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the influence of modern oral contraceptive pills (OCP) on Peak Nasal Inspiratory Flow (PNIF) in a large cohort.
    • To determine if current OCP formulations affect nasal airflow.

    Main Methods:

    • Peak Nasal Inspiratory Flow (PNIF) was measured in 248 healthy women (ages 14-51).
    • Participants were divided into a study group (109 taking modern OCP) and a control group (148 not taking OCP).
    • Statistical analysis was performed to assess the effect of OCP on PNIF.

    Main Results:

    • No significant effect of oral contraceptive pills (OCP) on nasal airflow (PNIF) was observed.
    • Height was found to influence PNIF in both OCP users and non-users.
    • Age did not show a statistically significant impact on PNIF.

    Conclusions:

    • Modern oral contraceptive pills (OCP) with lower estrogen doses do not appear to affect nasal airflow or nasal patency.
    • Findings suggest OCP use is unlikely to negatively impact nasal mucosa or function.
