Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Neurology

Background:

  • Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LARP) is a standard treatment for localized prostate cancer.
  • While generally safe with low complication rates, rare adverse events can occur.
  • Unexplained paralysis post-LARP is not documented in existing literature.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report the first documented case of complete motor paralysis following LARP.
  • To discuss the diagnostic challenges and multidisciplinary evaluation of this rare complication.
  • To explore potential etiologies and effective treatment strategies for post-LARP paralysis.

Main Methods:

  • A case report of a patient experiencing complete motor paralysis after LARP.
  • Comprehensive multidisciplinary evaluation to determine the cause of paralysis.
  • Description of the aggressive multimodality treatment approach implemented.

Main Results:

  • The patient developed complete motor paralysis immediately following LARP.
  • Extensive investigations failed to yield a definitive diagnosis.
  • Aggressive multimodality treatment resulted in full motor recovery.

Conclusions:

  • Complete motor paralysis is an exceptionally rare complication of LARP.
  • Prompt and aggressive multidisciplinary treatment can lead to favorable outcomes.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the etiology and optimize management of this phenomenon.
