Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

623
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Operant Conditioning Intervention01:24

Operant Conditioning Intervention

690
Operant conditioning serves as a foundational principle in therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying maladaptive behaviors. Central to this approach is the notion that behaviors, both adaptive and maladaptive, are learned through reinforcement. By analyzing the environmental factors that reinforce problematic behaviors, clinicians can design interventions to weaken these reinforcements and replace maladaptive behaviors with healthier alternatives.
In operant conditioning, behaviors that are...

CNS Depressants: Alcohol and Nicotine

1.7K
Ethanol, a clear colorless alcohol, has been consumed by humans for millennia, but its effects on the body are far from benign. At lower doses, it induces decreased inhibitions and loquaciousness, leading to its social appeal. However, it can cause severe consequences at higher doses, such as coma and respiratory depression, due to its zero-order elimination kinetics. Chronic ethanol abuse wreaks havoc on multiple organ systems, particularly the CNS and the liver. Abrupt cessation of ethanol...

Summary

This study found that single-session interventions like ASTP and BASICS effectively reduced students' estimated blood alcohol concentration (eBAC). Motivational interviewing (MI) microskills did not significantly impact outcomes in this mandated student population.

Area of Science:

  • Addiction research
  • Clinical psychology
  • Public health

Background:

  • High-risk college students mandated to interventions often face alcohol policy violations.
  • Single-session interventions are increasingly explored for efficacy in this population.
  • The role of motivational interviewing (MI) microskills in such interventions requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of three single-session interventions for mandated high-risk students.
  • To examine the influence of motivational interviewing (MI) microskills on intervention outcomes.
  • To compare Alcohol Skills Training Program (ASTP), Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS), and Alcohol Diversion Program (ADP) educational groups.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, controlled pilot trial involving 61 undergraduate students sanctioned for alcohol policy violations.
  • Interventions included ASTP, BASICS feedback sessions, and ADP educational groups.
  • Data collected on estimated blood alcohol concentration (eBAC), weekly drinks, and alcohol-related consequences.

Main Results:

  • Significant reductions in eBAC and weekly drinks over time were observed for ASTP and BASICS participants.
  • No significant changes in eBAC, weekly drinks, or alcohol-related consequences were found for the ADP group.
  • Motivational interviewing (MI) microskills did not demonstrate a relationship with study outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • MI-based interventions (ASTP, BASICS) showed comparable behavioral impacts.
  • Individual differences in outcomes suggest a need for customized mandated interventions.
  • Education-only interventions (ADP) may be less effective in reducing alcohol consumption in mandated students.
