Plant Breeding and Biotechnology

22.4K
Crop cultivation has a long history in human civilization, with records showing the cultivation of cereal plants beginning at around 8000 BC. This early plant breeding was developed primarily to provide a steady supply of food.

Area of Science:

  • Nutritional Science
  • Biotechnology
  • Food Science

Background:

  • Folate deficiency is a significant global health concern.
  • Metabolically engineered (biofortified) foods offer a promising strategy to address micronutrient deficiencies.
  • Folate rice is a biofortified rice line engineered to be rich in folates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the biological impact and effectiveness of folates supplied by folate rice.
  • To evaluate the potential of folate rice in combating folate deficiency using a rat model.

Main Methods:

  • A 7/12-week depletion/repletion study was conducted with five groups of Wistar rats.
  • Animals were fed folate-free diets, wild-type rice, folate rice, folic acid fortified rice, or a positive control diet.
  • Hematological parameters (hematocrit) and folate concentrations in plasma and red blood cells (RBCs) were monitored.

Main Results:

  • Rats on folate-deficient diets or receiving wild-type rice showed decreased hematocrit, low plasma and RBC folate levels, leading to morbidity and mortality.
  • Supplementation with folate rice or folic acid fortified rice (approx. 3.00–3.12 μg/rat/day) resulted in survival of all animals.
  • Animals receiving folate rice or folic acid fortified rice exhibited normalized hematocrit, increased plasma and RBC folate concentrations, and counteracted hyperhomocysteinemia.

Conclusions:

  • Biofortified folate rice serves as a valuable dietary source of folate.
  • Consumption of folate rice effectively alleviates anemia and counteracts hyperhomocysteinemia in an animal model.
  • Folate rice holds potential for fighting folate deficiency and improving public health.
