Teeth

2.4K
The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.
In the bud stage, the tooth germ (an aggregation of cells) starts to form in the developing jawbone. During the cap stage, the tooth germ differentiates into enamel organ, dental papilla, and dental sac, which will later develop into the tooth's enamel, dentin...

    Summary

Lasers show potential in periodontal therapy by enhancing wound healing and tissue repair. However, inconsistent laser parameters across studies create controversy regarding their true clinical benefits.

    Area of Science:

    • Periodontology
    • Biomedical Engineering
    • Dental Laser Applications

    Background:

    • Lasers have been explored in periodontal treatment for approximately 50 years.
    • Low-intensity lasers stimulate growth factors, potentially aiding wound healing.
    • High-intensity lasers are used for root biomodification and dentin hypersensitivity reduction.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To provide an overview of current concepts and findings on laser use in periodontal therapy.
    • To emphasize data from Latin-American researchers in this field.
    • To address the ongoing controversy surrounding laser and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy benefits.

    Main Methods:

    • Review of existing literature on laser applications in periodontology.
    • Analysis of studies focusing on low-intensity and high-intensity laser effects.

  • Compilation of research findings, particularly from Latin American studies.
  • Main Results:

    • Low-intensity lasers may promote tissue repair and aid regenerative procedures.
    • High-intensity lasers offer alternatives in nonsurgical periodontal therapy.
    • Significant variation in laser application parameters hinders comparative analysis and consensus.

    Conclusions:

    • While promising, the definitive benefits of lasers in periodontal and peri-implant treatment remain debated.
    • Standardization of laser parameters is crucial for future research and clinical application.
    • Further research, especially from diverse geographical regions, is needed to clarify laser efficacy.
