    Background:

    • Early blind (EB) individuals are often anecdotally reported to have superior musical abilities.
    • However, scientific investigation into their specific musical rhythm and beat processing capabilities is lacking.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate and compare the beat asynchrony detection and duration discrimination thresholds between early blind and sighted control (SC) individuals.
    • To explore these abilities across auditory and vibrotactile modalities.

    Main Methods:

    • Employed an adaptive 'up and down' procedure to measure thresholds.
    • Assessed beat asynchrony detection and duration discrimination.
    • Tested participants in both auditory and vibrotactile modalities.
    • Matched early blind and sighted control groups for age, gender, and musical experience.

    Main Results:

    • Early blind subjects demonstrated significantly lower thresholds (better performance) than sighted controls in beat asynchrony detection for both auditory and vibrotactile stimuli.
    • Early blind subjects also showed a lower threshold for duration discrimination in the vibrotactile modality only.

    • Early blindness is associated with enhanced beat asynchrony detection abilities, potentially contributing to superior musicality.
    • These findings suggest that sensory compensation mechanisms in early blindness may extend to complex auditory-rhythmic processing.
