Background:

  • Bone density changes during pregnancy and lactation are not fully understood.
  • Quantitative ultrasonometry (QUS) offers a radiation-free method to assess bone health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate bone changes during pregnancy and postpartum using QUS.
  • To identify risk factors for bone loss during pregnancy.

Main Methods:

  • 125 pregnant women were assessed using calcaneal QUS.
  • Measurements included speed of sound (SOS), broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA), and stiffness index.
  • Assessments were conducted throughout pregnancy and up to one year postpartum.

Main Results:

  • A significant decrease in bone mass (t-score and stiffness index) occurred from the second to third trimester of pregnancy.
  • Bone mass remained stable during lactation, irrespective of duration.
  • Bone loss during pregnancy was recovered later in life.

Conclusions:

  • Young primiparas with sedentary lifestyles are at higher risk of pregnancy-related bone loss.
  • Bone loss during pregnancy is generally reversible, but underlying mechanisms require further investigation.
  • QUS is a valuable tool for monitoring bone health during pregnancy.
