Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate FOME performance in octogenarians and centenarians.
  • To assess the utility of extended learning trials in the FOME for very old adults.
  • To provide normative data for the FOME in the oldest old population.

Main Methods:

  • 80 octogenarians and 244 centenarians completed the FOME.
  • Performance on storage, retrieval, repeated retrieval, and ineffective reminder indices was analyzed.
  • Data were stratified by age group, education, and cognitive status.

Main Results:

  • Octogenarians significantly outperformed centenarians on all FOME measures.
  • Both groups showed minimal benefit from learning trials beyond Trial 3 (storage) and Trial 2 (retention/retrieval).
  • Centenarians showed slight improvement in ineffective reminders between Trials 1 and 2, while octogenarians showed no change.

Conclusions:

  • Extended learning trials in the FOME may not be beneficial for octogenarians and centenarians.
  • A truncated FOME version could reduce testing burden without compromising assessment.
  • Findings suggest optimizing cognitive assessment protocols for the oldest old population.
